About Mistletoe (Viscum album L.) (birdlime mistletoe, European mistletoe, misteltoe,)

An evergreen, 30-75 cm tall, globose shrub of the family Viscaceae, living up to 70 years, parasitic on deciduous trees (birch, maple, willow, pear, apple, larch), less frequently on conifers. Stem glabrous, rounded, yellowish-green, very brittle, abundantly bi-branched. Leaves are opposite, glabrous, 2-10 cm long, 1-1,5 cm wide, lanceolate or oblong-ovate, obtuse, wedge-shaped at base, glabrous, leathery, yellowish-green or green. Leaf margins smooth, slightly curled, with indistinct venation. Dioecious. Flowers are legless, yellowish-green, clustered in clusters of 5-6 at the apex of dichotomous branches. Male flowers larger than female flowers, with a 4-part perianth. Stamens 4, with antherless anthers. Female flowers with a barely visible, greenish-yellow perianth; pistil short, with a semi-inferior, monoecious knot. Fruit is a green, then white, glossy false berry, 9-10 mm in diameter. Flesh sticky. Blooms in March-April. The female flowers begin to bloom earlier than the male. The berries ripen in winter.

Preparation. Young twigs and leaves of mistletoe (Visci herba) are cut for medicinal use. They are collected from late autumn throughout the winter (until March-April). The most valuable mistletoe is thought to grow on willows. It is dried in a well-ventilated room. The raw material has an unpleasant smell and is bitterly volatile. Store in a dark place in dense cloth bags or glass jars. Suitable for 1 year.

Usage. Mistletoe extract is used for atherosclerosis and hypertensive disease, epilepsy and nervous diseases. It lowers arterial pressure, dilates blood vessels, strengthens the heart and reduces central nervous system sensitivity.

Contraindications. Mistletoe is poisonous. Its preparations should not be used in case of low blood pressure, asthenia, as well as during pregnancy.
